AS1684 (Residential Timber Framed Construction Standard)

AS 1684-2010 Standard and Amendments

AS 1684 is a four-part Australian Standard covering design criteria, building practices, tie-downs, bracing and span tables for timber framing members. By complying with this Standard, users are ‘deemed to satisfy’ the requirements of the Building Code of Australia.  Sections 2,3 and 4 were amended in 2010 by the Standards Australia Technical Committee, based on feedback from users.  The Timber Framing Code now covers a wider range of acceptable practices with a greater number of technical explanations included in the latest amendments.
An annotated version of Section 2 and 3 of AS 1684-2010 is provided below for teachers and lecturers.  Copyright permission has been provided by SAI Global solely for the purpose of education, so this document is not for general distribution.
Below is a list of the 4 sections of AS 1684 and links for purchase:

AS 1684.4-2010 Residential timber-framed construction – Simplified – Non-cyclonic areas

Ten User Guides have been developed to assist builders, designers and architects with the interpretation of particular aspects of the Standard. Detailed information, recommendations and worked examples are included.

AS1684 Educational Resource Package

Annotated Standard, User Guides and PowerPoint Presentations

This edition (June 2010) supersedes previous AS1684 Educational Resource Packages (ERP) and inserts.   Previous versions should be discarded and replaced with this new edition (that were delivered in hardcopy to many institutions).
The standard is a very large document so we have provided the annotated version in 14 separate files for download.  The PowerPoint presentations and user guides are listed with the sections they are relevant to.
